Today’s Ire

Start a conversation with anyone today, stranger, friend, or even a family member, and within sixty seconds you could be in the midst of a full-on shouting match, or worse. Angst seems to be the first response to any situation where the slightest conflict is evident. “I hate (fill in your favorite target here)” is the initial response and often the only response you receive to what may be a simple query. So, I thought the topic of anger might be a suitable focus for my second attempt at serious poetry. What follows is that piece which was read at an open mic night at Lakefly Writer’s Conference this past month.

Today's Ire

Anger, insufficient.
Hate, better.
Rage, closer.
Blind rage, yes that’s it!
Completely debilitating.

Ability to listen, lost.
Common sense, vanishes.
Topics, limited to right or wrong.
High school football debates become yelling matches.
Neighbor’s landscape projects end in restraining orders.
Holiday celebrations devolve into splintered families and changed wills.

Where does your rage come from?
Lies, media driven by profits,
Rhetoric, politicians narrate to retain power,
Misinformation, narrative over truth.
Ideology, social acceptance.

Is your rage worth the cost?
No information source is trustworthy,
Paranoia drives intention,
Violence for violence’s sake,
Isolation from relationships.

When will it end?
Think critically, who benefits from your rage?
Remove the blinders, question sources before accepting them.
Release the rage.
Give grace.

Lakefly 2025

It’s that time of year again. I will head to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, for the Lakefly Writers Conference in a week and a half. I need to decide what I will read during the open mic event on Friday. It was so much fun last year. I also submitted a flash piece to the annual writing competition. They have notified the finalists, and I was not among the lucky few. So, I’ll try again next year.

Work on my second novel hit a few bumps, and it appears I will need to rethink the chapter sequence to include threads from the first book that are necessary for plot continuity. Thankfully, the new chapters should fit nicely, interspersed with the existing ones. Writing with multiple POVs is new for me. I hope I can do right by the characters.

In addition to the rework on my second novel, I’ve written a short story focusing on a Highwayman. It was a project inspired by the song, Highwayman, by the country supergroup the Highwaymen. The response I received from my writers group to it was positive. It is now ready for submission. Just for giggles, I started a sequel to it.

So, there you have it. A quick update on my writing endeavors and a preview of the upcoming trip to LakeFly. I’ll keep you all updated on my progress, slow that it may be.
